What do I need to consider when choosing a Tree?
Below are some important points to consider when looking at purchasing a tree:
1. Would you prefer evergreen or deciduous?
Deciduous trees come into leaf from March to late May, and drop their leaves anywhere between October and December (depending on the weather and variety of tree). Evergreen trees will retain their leaves all year and make excellent screening. We stock a large range of trees to suit all requirements but deciduous trees offer far more variety, colour and flowers and some also have a dense branching structure which gives good screening even with no leaves.
2. What height would you like to purchase the tree at?
We stock all sizes of trees from 200cm to 6m+. However, the taller the trees are the more expensive and more challenging they are to deliver. It is worth considering if you are able to manoeuvre and plant the larger trees yourself or whether you would prefer to purchase a smaller tree or maybe if you are planting a number of large specimen trees we could quote you for planting them!
3. How tall would you like the tree to grow to?
When purchasing any plants it is always beneficial to know what their ultimate height will be. This will prevent trees from becoming too large for the area they are planted in and ensure that trees are planted a sufficient distance away from any buildings if they have a vigorous root system.
4. What is the soil type?
Understanding the different types of soil is essential if you want your trees to establish and flourish. This is because each variety of tree requires a different type of soil in order to thrive and reward you with lush foliage and dazzling flowers. Some trees are hardy and can withstand various soil conditions, whilst other plants are very fussy about their needs. There are a number of ways to find out what type of soil is in your garden. If you want to find out right now, have a look at the plants that are growing in your neighbours' gardens and then find out what sort of soil those plants grow in. If you are still unsure, you can buy a soil-testing kit from your local garden centre.
5. How wide is the narrowest point through which the tree will go to its planting position?
This may determine the size of plant that you are able to purchase, we can only deliver large specimen trees to the nearest concrete surface from the lorry, so you will need to be able to move the tree into its final position. If it is a smaller tree that has been ordered our helpful drivers will place the tree in a safe and secure place when we deliver, ready for the tree to be planted.
