How often should I feed my tree?
If the trees have been planted correctly initially with the right amount of added slow release fertiliser to the soil they will not need fertilisation in the first one or two growing seasons. An annual top dressing of fertiliser will ensure that the tree will enjoy good health and make adequate growth each season.
How do I know if my tree needs some fertilizer?
Trees benefit forms an annual fertilization which invigorates them and makes them less vulnerable to insects and diseases. To determine whether a particular tree needs fertilizer, check its twig growth. If new growth over the past year (the length of the twig from its tip to the slightly raised ring indicating where growth started last spring) is less than two inches, consider fertilizing. If it is more than four inches the tree probably does not need feeding. As a rule of thumb, fertilize any tree that has not been fed for several years, or that is not growing at a normal rate.
What fertilisers should I use?
There are a number of things to consider when choosing a fertiliser. You will need to determine what nutrients your tree needs to thrive and also analyse the surrounding soil to see what nutrients are currently in the soil. Once you know what your tree needs and what is available in the soil, you can determine the nutrients and the amounts that you need to add to the soil.
The amount of each nutrient, that you need to add to the soil, will determine your choice of fertilizer. Choose the one that best matches your needs.
Two main tree fertilizers
1. Organic Tree Fertilizers. These are slow-release nutrient compounds that come from plant and animal sources. Organic fertilizers can be more expensive and are typically made from manure and chicken litter or bone and cottonseed meal.
2. Inorganic Fertilizers. Commercial fertilizers are compared by the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in their mixture. Ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate are the most common.
These fertilizers can be found at reputable garden centres and ask for advice if you are unsure which product to choose. Always read the label when applying any form of fertiliser so you do not damage your tree or any surrounding trees and shrubs.
How do I fertilize my tree?
Measure out the amount of fertilizer you need. Mark the outside boundary of the root system (Tree roots grow at least twice as far from the trunk as the branches do) with a garden hose. Also mark a circle 3 to 4 feet from the trunk. Evenly spread the fertilizer between the two circles, avoiding application close to the trunk. If the tree is in a lawn, apply when grass is dry. Water well to moisten the soil and distribute the fertilizer to a 12- to 18-inch depth.
Do I have to fertilize my tree forever?
Once ornamental trees reach maturity it is difficult to feed them effectively. It is recommended that professional arborists be hired to evaluate and feed valued specimens and those trees that have health problems
